State of California Adopts "Freedom Flag" as Official Symbol of Remembrance for September 11, 2001

The California State Senate unanimously approved ACR 225 to adopt the Freedom Flag as its Official Flag of Remembrance for 9/11.
On 13 Aug 2026, the California State Senate unanimously approved ACR 225 to adopt the Freedom Flag as its Official Flag of Remembrance for 9/11. California, the largest state in the nation (pop. 39M), becomes the 4th state to adopt this flag, following the lead of Virginia (2018 - VAC § 1-510), Oklahoma (2022 - O.S Title 25 §93.3), and Delaware (2022 - 29 Del. C. §331). Enabling legislation was sponsored by Assemblywoman Blanca E. Rubio and supported by the Rotary Club of Azusa through partnership with the Azusa Rotary Field of Glory, a Patriot Day tradition that includes 500 US Flags displayed annually at the Azusa City Hall.

California's connection with the attacks of Sept. 11th has been largely forgotten: all 4 hijacked commercial aircraft were transcontinental flights bound for LAX (Los Angeles) and SFO (San Francisco) airports. As a result, over 50 Californians perished on 9/11/2001, among the 2,977 total victims.

The Freedom Flag Foundation supported Assy. Rubio's legislative efforts as part of its mission to see the Freedom Flag become our National Symbol of Remembrance for 9/11.
